Hardware Requirements

Cinelerra is by no means a "light" program. The demands of reading, decoding and playing video on your system can be quite taxing and very resource hungry. Performance (and thus usability) of cinelerra is directly related to the speed, I/O, video and memory of your hardware and to the type of stress that you expect to put on the system. For some users working with audio only or light video formats, a small system might prove sufficient, but to anyone trying to work on DV with several tracks of audio plus a healty set of effects and transitions... it would be completely useless. As a general rule, I would suggest running cinelerra on systems with not less than the following specs :

CPU speed
At least 500 mhz CPU speed, anything less would be useless. I personally run a P4 2.4 Gig CPU, performance is quite satisfactory.

Memory
Regarding memory.. the more, the merrier. When working with video, a large amount of memory available can help speed up things by avoiding unnecesary disk swaps and keeping material ready accessible. To get a basic idea of what Cinelerra can do you should have at least 256 Megabytes of memory. To really use Cinelerra for larger projects much larger (> 1 Gig) memory space would be required.

Storage
Storage requirements are based on your particular video editing needs. If you expect to produce long pieces in heavy formats (DV uses about 3.5 Megs per second, or 12 Gigs per hour!) you better get a large (>40 Gig) and fast disk drive. For smaller projects you might get awy with that gig left on the laptop. Video editing can be quite I/O intensive, for better results be sure to use a fast drive and to configure it appropiately.

Video Adapters
Cinelerra uses your systems X server to manage it's display functions, having that in mind a video card with good XFree86 driver support is your best option. If you are interested on producing a composite signal to send directly on a TV or Video Recorder, make sure your video card of choice supports it. The author uses a NVidia GForce4 MX440se with good results

Monitors
Multiple Monitors
You can use XFree86's xinerama features to work on multiple monitor heads. This feature can be a very effective way of increasing productivity, if you have available these resources, I highly recommend them.

TV-Out
If your Adapter supports a TV-Out option, connecting a TV or svideo monitor to it is a great way to view your material as it will be seen on TV screen.

Video4Linux
If you have an analog video camera, or want to grab video from a trusty, old VCR, you need some sort of video grabber. Video grabbers are supported through Video4Linux in Cinelerra. (more needed...)

Firewire
Firewire is the fastest way to download material into your system. Unless you will be downloading all you media materials from a CD or any other pre-captured format (or use an analog video grabber), you will need firewire on your system. ( to learn more about Firewire on linux look at: ConfiguringFirewire?)

DV Cameras
There is an large variety of DV cameras that can be used with Cinelerra. As a matter of fact almost any camera that can connect to firewire will work. What is important is to be sure to set the appropiate parameters on the video grabbing system to match the particulars of your camera. (For more information look at the DVCameras topic page)

Video capture Cards
(need more...) Video capture cards, also called "video grabbers", are supported through
Video4Linux.

   Installing The Software

  Installing from binaries

If they exist, binary distribuitions can be a straight forward way of installing Cinelerra on your system. Although "easier" to do, the down side of this method is that the software will be built for a "default" system that might not take advantage of your machines features.

RPM's
On RPM based distribuitions The easiest way to install Cinelerra is :
rpm -U --force --nodeps hvirtual*.rpm

Portage
On Gentoo Cinelerra is in Portage, so you just have to type
emerge cinelerra

Tarballs (slackware)
On Slackware you can install the cinelerra package (e.g. from www.linuxpackages.org) by running
installpkg cinelerra*.tgz

Other Packaging Systems
any volunteer to tackle this other ?

  Installing from source

Installing from source is a little more complex than from binaries, but when built, Cinelerra will be able to take advantage of all the available to it, such as CPU optimization and existing system libraries.

Depending on wich sources you will be installing from, follow the appropiate instructions. The original compile instructions from the developer can be found here.
For more details, look at the DistributionSpecificIssues page for your particular distribuition.

  Location of the installed files

When properly configured, Cinelerra files will be installed on the following locations:

Foreign language translations - These go into /usr/share/locale.

Cinelerra executable - This goes into /usr/bin

Cinelerra plugins - These go into /usr/lib/cinelerra

soundtest - Utility for determining sound card buffer size.

mplexhi - Multiplexing of MPEG elementary streams with standards conformance.

mplexlo - Multiplexing of MPEG elementary streams without standards conformance but more efficiently.

mpeg3toc - Utility for indexing and reading MPEG files.

Cinelerra plugins - These go into /usr/lib/cinelerra

soundtest - Utility for determining sound card buffer size.

mplexhi - Multiplexing of MPEG elementary streams with standards conformance.

mpeg3toc - Utility for indexing and reading MPEG files.

It should be noted, that this Info is meant for people compiling from original Heroine's version of the sources, not from CVS or CVS tarball.

It should be noted that the compiler used in building Cinelerra binaries is the free GNU compiler and very conservative optimization flags. You can try different compilers and optimization flags by compiling the source but this is hard.

The compilation is verified on a vanilla Red Hat 9.0 installation, workstation mode.
Red Hat 9.0 doesn't install nasm. This has to be installed manually for compilation to succeed.

Compiling the source is hard and there's no warranty if the source code fails to compile, but the method for compiling starts by downloading the source code and decompressing.

tar jxf cinelerra*.tar.bz2

Enter the hvirtual directory

     cd cinelerra

and set the CFLAGS environment variable. The flags for the GCC compiler are constantly changing. These are our most recent flags. For Pentium II use:

     export CFLAGS='-O3 -march=i686 -fmessage-length=0 -funroll-all-loops -fomit-frame-pointer -falign-loops=2 -falign-jumps=2 -falign-functions=2'

For Pentium I and old AMD's use:

     export CFLAGS='-O3 -fmessage-length=0 -funroll-all-loops -fomit-frame-pointer -falign-loops=2 -falign-jumps=2 -falign-functions=2'

For new AMD's use:

     export CFLAGS='-O3 -march=athlon -fmessage-length=0 -funroll-all-loops -fomit-frame-pointer -falign-loops=2 -falign-jumps=2 -falign-functions=2'

Then run

     make

The make procedure should run through all the directories and put binaries in the i686 directories. When we originally supported Alpha it was convenient to compile Alpha and i686 binaries simultaneously, in different directories, so all the binaries are put in subdirectories.

Once finished run

     make install

to install the binaries. The output is put in the following directories:

Executables -> /usr/bin

Plugins -> /usr/lib/cinelerra

Translations -> /usr/share/locale/*/LC_MESSAGES/cinelerra.mo

The main binaries are /usr/bin/cinelerra and several utilities for reading MPEG transport streams.

Run Cinelerra by running

     /usr/bin/cinelerra

Executables -> /usr/bin

Plugins -> /usr/lib/cinelerra

Translations -> /usr/share/locale/*/LC_MESSAGES/cinelerra.mo

The main binaries are /usr/bin/cinelerra and several utilities for reading MPEG transport streams.

Run Cinelerra by running

     /usr/bin/cinelerra
