<p />
If you are as clueless as I was when I learned about <strong>Cinelerra</strong>, My guess is that your first question is :
<p />
Q: <strong>What is Cinelerra</strong> ?
<p />
A: <strong>Cinelerra</strong> is a tool that helps you edit video.
<p />
Q: <strong>What is editing video</strong> ?
<p />
A: Editing video is... transforming a bunch of raw footage into a finished product.
<p />
Q: <strong>So how exactly do I edit video</strong> ?
<p />
A: Ah.. good question...
<p />
<p />
First you got to get some raw material to work with. This raw material is some kind of media... like video, sound, background music or even pictures. We call this material <span class="twikiNewLink" style="background : #FFFFCE;"><font color="#0000FF">media</font><a href="http://www.ftconsult.com/twiki/bin/edit/Cinelerra/Media?topicparent=Cinelerra.UltimateBegginersGuide">?</a></span> and when this <span class="twikiNewLink" style="background : #FFFFCE;"><font color="#0000FF">media</font><a href="http://www.ftconsult.com/twiki/bin/edit/Cinelerra/Media?topicparent=Cinelerra.UltimateBegginersGuide">?</a></span> is not yet ready to be used we call it <span class="twikiNewLink" style="background : #FFFFCE;"><font color="#0000FF">raw footage</font><a href="http://www.ftconsult.com/twiki/bin/edit/Cinelerra/RawFootage?topicparent=Cinelerra.UltimateBegginersGuide">?</a></span>
<p />
Once you got this media on hand, it will be in a wide assortment of formats, formats such as VHS tapes or Film or audio cassettes or mpeg or mp3 files. Unfortunately media in this formats won't help you much so, somehow you are going to have to load it into the computer so we can use it. We call this process capturing or digitizing media.
<p />
For this introductory document I am not going to go into the technical details of * how * to do all this steps, I will just describe the process to illustrate how video editing is done, but I will have links where to find that information in this wiki from advanced <span class="twikiNewLink" style="background : #FFFFCE;"><font color="#0000FF">technical details</font><a href="http://www.ftconsult.com/twiki/bin/edit/Cinelerra/TechnicalDetails?topicparent=Cinelerra.UltimateBegginersGuide">?</a></span> to introductory step by step <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/Tutorials">tutorials</a> .
<p />
Ok, lets continue. Let's say you got all this media on to your computer; Now what?
<p />
Well.. assuming you got some idea of what your finished video should look like, then your next step would be to look at all the raw material that you now have (captured) and find just the exact pieces that you really like to include on your finished product.
<p />
Once you are done deciding in your head what material you want to keep, you then use a tool (such as <strong>Cinelerra</strong>) to cut this nice portions out of the raw footage so you can later paste them together forming a finished product.
<p />
<em>Cutting is actually a word that comes all the way from the time when pieces of film were physically cut out of long rolls of developed film to select the best parts and later pasted together with glue to create the final product that you actually saw at the movie theater. (Of course what you saw was a copy.. not the glued one)</em>
<p />
Anyway, you now have a collection of media <span class="twikiNewLink" style="background : #FFFFCE;"><font color="#0000FF">clips</font><a href="http://www.ftconsult.com/twiki/bin/edit/Cinelerra/Clips?topicparent=Cinelerra.UltimateBegginersGuide">?</a></span> (cut out portions of <span class="twikiNewLink" style="background : #FFFFCE;"><font color="#0000FF">raw footage</font><a href="http://www.ftconsult.com/twiki/bin/edit/Cinelerra/RawFootage?topicparent=Cinelerra.UltimateBegginersGuide">?</a></span>) which you dutifully <span class="twikiNewLink" style="background : #FFFFCE;"><font color="#0000FF">label</font><a href="http://www.ftconsult.com/twiki/bin/edit/Cinelerra/Label?topicparent=Cinelerra.UltimateBegginersGuide">?</a></span> to give them meaning.. say, image of church, bride entering church , music track for the wedding march, kids smiling and so on .. you get the idea.
<p />
Finally, you take all the clips and arrange them on a <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/Timeline">timeline</a> or sequence of clips one after the other to tell your story (<em>just like the movie guys pasted back the clips to make a film</em>) .
<p />
The neat thing about this process is that unlike watching video straight from your camera (<span class="twikiNewLink" style="background : #FFFFCE;"><font color="#0000FF">raw footage</font><a href="http://www.ftconsult.com/twiki/bin/edit/Cinelerra/RawFootage?topicparent=Cinelerra.UltimateBegginersGuide">?</a></span>) , the material does not have to be in the same order as you got it. It does not even have to be taken at the same time or place.. for example, you could use an old clip of butterflies over flowers taken a year ago and paste it right after your clip couple leaving church to make a nice ending sequence.
<p />
So that is what it is, <span class="twikiNewLink" style="background : #FFFFCE;"><font color="#0000FF">Cinelerra</font><a href="http://www.ftconsult.com/twiki/bin/edit/Cinelerra/Cinelerra?topicparent=Cinelerra.UltimateBegginersGuide">?</a></span> is just a tool that helps you do all this steps, from capturing the media into your computer, to <span class="twikiNewLink" style="background : #FFFFCE;"><font color="#0000FF">viewing</font><a href="http://www.ftconsult.com/twiki/bin/edit/Cinelerra/Viewing?topicparent=Cinelerra.UltimateBegginersGuide">?</a></span>, <span class="twikiNewLink" style="background : #FFFFCE;"><font color="#0000FF">selecting</font><a href="http://www.ftconsult.com/twiki/bin/edit/Cinelerra/Selecting?topicparent=Cinelerra.UltimateBegginersGuide">?</a></span>, <span class="twikiNewLink" style="background : #FFFFCE;"><font color="#0000FF">clipping</font><a href="http://www.ftconsult.com/twiki/bin/edit/Cinelerra/Clipping?topicparent=Cinelerra.UltimateBegginersGuide">?</a></span>, <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/Editing">editing</a>, <span class="twikiNewLink" style="background : #FFFFCE;"><font color="#0000FF">pasting</font><a href="http://www.ftconsult.com/twiki/bin/edit/Cinelerra/Pasting?topicparent=Cinelerra.UltimateBegginersGuide">?</a></span> and finally <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/Rendering">rendering</a> your masterpiece into a finished file! Like a word processor for media.
<p />
The best part is that this is just the tip of the iceberg of what <strong>Cinelerra</strong> can do. <strong>Cinelerra</strong> has many other features to help you transform your media in multiple ways, like <span class="twikiNewLink" style="background : #FFFFCE;"><font color="#0000FF">transitions</font><a href="http://www.ftconsult.com/twiki/bin/edit/Cinelerra/Transitions?topicparent=Cinelerra.UltimateBegginersGuide">?</a></span> to smooth out when switching from one clip to another, or video and audio effects to adjust the sound and colors or <span class="twikiNewLink" style="background : #FFFFCE;"><font color="#0000FF">chroma</font><a href="http://www.ftconsult.com/twiki/bin/edit/Cinelerra/Chroma?topicparent=Cinelerra.UltimateBegginersGuide">?</a></span> effects to create that TV weatherman effect.
<p />
<strong>Cinelerra</strong> is a very sophisticated piece of software, and as such at times it can be complex and difficult to understand. In this wiki we will try to describe all the features available in both technical and introductory levels so to be a document for all audiences.
<p />
So; follow the links to whatever is your current area of interest, try the <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/Tutorials">tutorials</a>, look at all the other <span class="twikiNewLink" style="background : #FFFFCE;"><font color="#0000FF">resources</font><a href="http://www.ftconsult.com/twiki/bin/edit/Cinelerra/Resources?topicparent=Cinelerra.UltimateBegginersGuide">?</a></span> and finally, think about <span class="twikiNewLink" style="background : #FFFFCE;"><font color="#0000FF">contributing</font><a href="http://www.ftconsult.com/twiki/bin/edit/Cinelerra/Contributing?topicparent=Cinelerra.UltimateBegginersGuide">?</a></span> back to this effort.
<p />
This documentation is being done by a group of volunteers, all what you see here is the effort of people interested on helping other people learn about <strong>Cinelerra</strong> and Video editing. If you see that anything that is incorrect, or incomplete or if you have knowledge of any particular topic, do not hesitate to correct, edit or <span class="twikiNewLink" style="background : #FFFFCE;"><font color="#0000FF">create a document</font><a href="http://www.ftconsult.com/twiki/bin/edit/Cinelerra/CreateADocument?topicparent=Cinelerra.UltimateBegginersGuide">?</a></span> of your own and contribute it to the effort.
<p />
Hope this helps.
