The slider control is the vertical bar with a knob located rigth below the <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/TimeBar">TimeBar</a> control on the <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/Viewer">viewer</a> and <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/Compositor">compositor</a> windows.
<p />
The <strong>slider</strong> allows you to quickly move through your media on the <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/Viewer">viewer</a> or the <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/Compositor">compositor</a> windows
<p />
<ul>
<li> to move the slider, click on the round "knob" and drag horizontally to reach your desired location.
</li>
</ul>
<p />
A key feature of the slider, is that it operates <strong>only</strong> on the area defined by the <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/PreviewRegion">PreviewRegion</a>. Since the <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/PreviewRegion">PreviewRegion</a> <strong>can</strong> be adjusted to cover a reduce area of material, but the slider travel area always remains the same, you effectively create a finer control of movement over the timeline.

You can alternately use the numbers on your number pad to control the position on the trackline. The <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/KeyboardShortcuts">key pad controls</a> once mastered can make it much easier to navigate around.

<p />
It is important to note that, when we use the <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/TransportControls">Transport Controls</a>, the <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/SliderControl">slider</a> moves along.  This, of course, effectively changes your working point for all operations. (<em>such as</em> <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/InsertionPoint">insertion</a>, <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/CutAndPasteEditing">cut &amp; paste</a> <em>, etc.</em>)
<p />
<img src="../../../pub/TWiki/TWikiDocGraphics/tip.gif" border="0" alt="TIP" width="16" height="16" /> Other notes :
<p />
When using frame advance functions, the behavior may seem odd. If you frame advance forward and then frame advance backward, the displayed frame doesn't change. This is because the playback position isn't the frame but the time between two frames. The rendered frame is the area that the playback position crosses. When you increment the time between two frames by one and decrement it by one, you cross the same frame both times and so the same frame is displayed.
<p />

I tried using labels in the main program window, to create reference points on the global timeline. I'm just very puzzled, by the behavior of cinelerra labels when i splice from the viewer into tracks in the main program window. When using splice , the labels are pushed as further out on the timeline as much as the lenghth of the splice. Is this intended behavior .. ? I expected the labels to stay in position on the timeline ...

This is because the playback position isn't the frame but the time between two frames. The rendered frame is the area that the playback position crosses. When you increment the time between two frames by one and decrement it by one, you cross the same frame both times and so the same frame is displayed.

<p />
<ul>
<li> to move the slider, click on the round "knob" and drag horizontally to reach your desired location.

<p />

The <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/PreviewRegion">PreviewRegion</a> is the "sub-region" of the timeline in which the <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/SliderControl">slider</a> operates.

By shrinking the <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/PreviewRegion">PreviewRegion</a> area we can narrow the total area where the <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/SliderControl">slider</a> operates, allowing us to precisely seek our position on the <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/Compositor">compositor</a> or <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/Viewer">viewer</a> <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/TimeBar">TimeBar</a>.
<p />
<h4><a name="Defining_the_Preview_Region"> </a> Defining the Preview Region </h4>

<p />
You can slide the <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/PreviewRegion">PreviewRegion</a> to the left or right without changing it's size by clicking inside the blue area ( <em>the cursor turns into a</em> " <strong>&lt;=&gt;</strong> " <em>pointer</em> ) and draggin on it.

When you append data or change the size of the current project, the <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/PreviewRegion">PreviewRegion</a> stays the same size and shrinks. Therefore, you need to resize the <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/PreviewRegion">PreviewRegion</a>.

I found that I had to use "overwrite" rather than "splice" to make the labels stay in place when inserting from the viewer. (Two screen editing) ... Makes sense too, I guess ... <img src="../../../pub/TWiki/SmiliesPlugin/smile.gif" alt="smile" title="smile" border="0" />

<p />

The <strong>slider</strong> allows you to quickly move through your media on the <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/Viewer">viewer</a> or the <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/Compositor">compositor</a> windows
<p />
<ul>
<li> to move the slider, click on the round "knob" and drag horizontally to reach your desired location.
</li>
</ul>
<p />

The <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/PreviewRegion">PreviewRegion</a> is the "sub-region" of the timeline in which the <a class="twikiLink" href="../../view/Cinelerra/SliderControl">slider</a> operates.

I found that I had to use "overwrite" rather than "splice" to make the labels stay in place when inserting from the viewer. (Two screen editing) ... Makes sense too, I guess ... <img src="../../../pub/TWiki/SmiliesPlugin/smile.gif" alt="smile" title="smile" border="0" />
