<p />
<img src="../../../pub/Cinelerra/CinelerraImages/slider.png" alt="slider.png" /> <br>
The slider control is the vertical bar with a knob located rigth below the <a class="twikiLink" href="TimeBar">TimeBar</a> control on the <a class="twikiLink" href="Viewer">viewer</a> and <a class="twikiLink" href="Compositor">compositor</a> windows.
<p />
The <strong>slider</strong> allows you to quickly move through your media on the <a class="twikiLink" href="Viewer">viewer</a> or the <a class="twikiLink" href="Compositor">compositor</a> windows
<p />
<ul>
<li> to move the slider, click on the round "knob" and drag horizontally to reach your desired location.
</li>
</ul>
<p />
A key feature of the slider, is that it operates <strong>only</strong> on the area defined by the <a class="twikiLink" href="PreviewRegion">PreviewRegion</a>. Since the <a class="twikiLink" href="PreviewRegion">PreviewRegion</a> <strong>can</strong> be adjusted to cover a reduce area of material, but the slider travel area always remains the same, you effectively create a finer control of movement over the timeline.

<p />
It is important to note that, when we use the <a class="twikiLink" href="TransportControls">Transport Controls</a>, the <a class="twikiLink" href="SliderControl">slider</a> moves along.  This, of course, effectively changes your working point for all operations. (<em>such as</em> <a class="twikiLink" href="InsertionPoint">insertion</a>, <a class="twikiLink" href="CutAndPasteEditing">cut &amp; paste</a> <em>, etc.</em>)
<p />
<img src="../../../pub/TWiki/TWikiDocGraphics/tip.gif" border="0" alt="TIP" width="16" height="16" /> Other notes :
<p />
When using frame advance functions, the behavior may seem odd. If you frame advance forward and then frame advance backward, the displayed frame doesn't change. This is because the playback position isn't the frame but the time between two frames. The rendered frame is the area that the playback position crosses. When you increment the time between two frames by one and decrement it by one, you cross the same frame both times and so the same frame is displayed.
<p />

<h3><a name="Fine_Movement_Control"> </a> Fine Movement Control </h3>
When browsing your media, sometimes it is necesary to have very acurate control of it's movement both forward and backwards. You can use the <a class="twikiLink" href="TransportControls">TransportControls</a> various speeds (even frame by frame!) to move but the <a class="twikiLink" href="SliderControl">SliderControl</a> is more convinient to use. The problem with the <a class="twikiLink" href="SliderControl">SliderControl</a> is that if the loaded media is too long, a small movement on the knob can mean a large shift on the timeline. For this reason Cinelerra has an adjustable timebar, capable of defining a <a class="twikiLink" href="PreviewRegion">PreviewRegion</a> for fine movement control.
<h3><a name="The_TimeBar"> </a> The <a class="twikiLink" href="TimeBar">TimeBar</a> </h3>
<img src="../../../pub/Cinelerra/CinelerraImages/timebar.png" alt="timebar.png" />

The <a class="twikiLink" href="TimeBar">TimeBar</a> is located below the video output window on the <a class="twikiLink" href="Viewer">viewer</a> and <a class="twikiLink" href="Compositor">compositor</a> windows
<p />
The <a class="twikiLink" href="TimeBar">TimeBar</a> is a visual guide to represents the entire time covered by the program, the position of the <a class="twikiLink" href="InsertionPoint">InsertionPoint</a> (as a vertical <strong>|</strong> line)and if you define  <a class="twikiLink" href="LabelControl">labels</a> or <a class="twikiLink" href="InOutPoint">InOutPoints</a> it displays those, too. Finally the <a class="twikiLink" href="TimeBar">TimeBar</a> defines a region known as the <a class="twikiLink" href="PreviewRegion">PreviewRegion</a>.

<p />
The <a class="twikiLink" href="PreviewRegion">PreviewRegion</a> is the "sub-region" of the timeline in which the <a class="twikiLink" href="SliderControl">slider</a> operates.
<p />
By shrinking the <a class="twikiLink" href="PreviewRegion">PreviewRegion</a> area we can narrow the total area where the <a class="twikiLink" href="SliderControl">slider</a> operates, allowing us to precisely seek our position on the <a class="twikiLink" href="Compositor">compositor</a> or <a class="twikiLink" href="Viewer">viewer</a> <a class="twikiLink" href="TimeBar">TimeBar</a>.
<p />
<h4><a name="Defining_the_Preview_Region"> </a> Defining the Preview Region </h4>
To define the area covered by the <a class="twikiLink" href="PreviewRegion">PreviewRegion</a> :
<ul>
<li> Click at the <strong>left</strong> end of the <a class="twikiLink" href="TimeBar">TimeBar</a>, (<em>the cursor turns into a left resize pointer</em>   " <code><b>|&lt;-</b></code> " )
</li>
<li> Drag it to the right as desired. (<em>shrinking the <a class="twikiLink" href="PreviewRegion">PreviewRegion</a></em>)
</li>
<li> Click at the <strong>right</strong> end of the <a class="twikiLink" href="TimeBar">TimeBar</a>, (<em>the cursor turns into a right resize pointer</em>   " <code><b>-&gt;|</b></code> " )
</li>
<li> Drag it to the left as desired. (<em>shrinking the <a class="twikiLink" href="PreviewRegion">PreviewRegion</a></em>)
</li>
</ul>
<p />
<img src="../../../pub/Cinelerra/CinelerraImages/slider.png" alt="slider.png" /> <br>
<em>Now you can move the <a class="twikiLink" href="SliderControl">slider</a> , but it will only will cover the <a class="twikiLink" href="PreviewRegion">PreviewRegion</a>. defined above</em>
<p />
You can slide the <a class="twikiLink" href="PreviewRegion">PreviewRegion</a> to the left or right without changing it's size by clicking inside the blue area ( <em>the cursor turns into a</em> " <strong>&lt;=&gt;</strong> " <em>pointer</em> ) and draggin on it.
<p />
<h4><a name="Other_Notes"> </a><a name="Other_Notes_"> </a> Other Notes : </h4>
<img src="../../../pub/TWiki/TWikiDocGraphics/warning.gif" border="0" alt="ALERT!" width="16" height="16" />When you replace a current project with a new media file the <a class="twikiLink" href="PreviewRegion">PreviewRegion</a> automatically resizes to cover the entire file.
<p />
When you append data or change the size of the current project, the <a class="twikiLink" href="PreviewRegion">PreviewRegion</a> stays the same size and shrinks. Therefore, you need to resize the <a class="twikiLink" href="PreviewRegion">PreviewRegion</a>.
