I use Cinelerra to make animation movies. I use a digital camera to take the snapshots. To sync the video with music, I created a program (perl) that strips out the labels of the .xml file generated by a Ctrl+S (save) operation. Then it creates a sheet with the number of frames the frames where you have labels (provided a framerate).. and if you print the sheet.. you can work with it as your storyboard, and write what would happen when. The you can shoot the pictures. After that... I copy the images to a subdir of the project, and run another little script which will create a JPEGLIST or PNGLIST out of the images, at a specified framerate. At that moment.. I can just drag the file from the ressources to the compositor window and it treats the list of images as a single video. I recommend the Gimp Animation Package, with the Gimp 2.0 if you want to work out the pictures before you make the video, or want to create special effects. Try it out

 footage

The Prelinger Archives are an excellent place to find public-domain and Creative-Commons licensed material for your film. There are great clips on just about any subject you can imagine.

 sound

The Freesound Project has many Creative-Commons-licensed audio samples. Everything from train noises to instrument samples to original digital creations.

Magnatune is a "non-evil" on-line record label that makes its artists' work available under a Creative Commons non-commercial license.

 other

Be sure to look up Creative Commons. They have many resources available for you to use in your films, be they images, videos, sounds, texts, etc.

 creating custom material

 your script

 storyboarding

This is incredibly important. Once your script is complete (or, perhaps, even while your script is in progress), begin working on your storyboards. A storyboard resembles a comic strip that has sketched out images of your entire movie, shot by shot, as well as scene locations, character names, important pieces of dialogue, camera movements, and other details essential for creating a shotlist and setting up your shot. Directors vary on the level of detail they put into their storyboards, but it is a good idea to be as specific as time and resources allow--a well-planned storyboard will make preparing and shooting easier and faster.

 script formating

Scripts work in a standard format. Every scene begins with the setting of the scene, followed by a description of that setting. The first character's name is introduced, followed by whatever screen direction pertains to that role. This is then followed by the dialogue itself. This pattern repeats itself over and over again. Scene setting and descriptions should be indented about 1.5" on the left and 1" on the right, stage directions about 3.7" on the left and 3" on the right and dialogue about 3" on the left and 2.3" on the right. This may seem tedious at first, but it becomes very easy to read once it's done, which is good for producers, directors, camera operators, actors, and grips alike. Set up your word processor to use styles properly, and this form become really very easy to deal with.

 creating your material

 audio

sync - the simplest way to sync aduoi with video is to hold your hands out in front of the camera, with both video and sound rolling, and clap twice. In the editing room, match up the clap image with the clap sound, and you're good to go.

noise - be sure when you are recording sound that you (or the sound operator) are wearing headphones that will accurate reflect what is coming into your mic (or mics). There's nothing worse than trying to edit and realizing that the sound went bad from an ambient noise or other recording problem.

post creating - creating sound effects is called "foley". It can be a lot of fun. Try using any of the wide range of open source sound editors. Planet CCRMA has a bunch of them.

Preparing the shots

LightingForVideo

Special effects

An interesting trick for fight scenes and other sequences requiring dangerous or difficult stunts for your actors is to film them doing the action backwards. For example, start your shot with one character's fist mashed (gently) in the face of an opponent. Then, with the opponent's head leading the action (pushing the fist away with his/her head), have the actor pull his or her hand away quickly. Cheesy as it sounds, once the frames are reversed, the effect looks pretty good. This is also great for effects shots of things rising mysteriously off the floor, people jumping to great heights (by actually jumping off an out-of-frame ladder), etc. You can reverse frames in Cinelerra with the Reverse Frames effect.

Another good trick is to speed up action sequences, particularly fighting sequences, to make the scene more intense. Be careful not to speed up too much and make the effect look cartoonish. An increase of 1.5 to 2 times speed works very well. Cinelerra's ? effect will help you do this.

 logistics

Creating an image page of thumbnails from your video files

Kino is an excellent complement to Cinelerra. It isn't nearly the video editor that Cinelerra is, but it captures video and lays it out in a way that makes logging hours of raw tape and adding comments very easy. It's Timeline view is particularly valuable for quickly judging the quality of shots.
